Few house chores are as humbling as trying to lift a mattress in order to put sheets on it, which is why I recently opted to try a mattress lifter for my bedroom. I’ve always dreaded changing my bedding, but the process became even more complicated a few years ago. When I changed apartments, I got a new mattress that’s 12 inches tall, and to make matters worse, my thick mattress topper increases the total height of my bed to a whopping 15 inches. This not only means I had to find new sheets to fit my now-gargantuan bed, but actually putting them on the bed became a sweat-inducing, back-breaking ordeal that used to put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day.
I’ve seen tools like the Bed MadeEZ Mattress Lifter many times online, but I never actually thought about getting one. But I’m all for simplifying routine home tasks, so I figured, why not give it a go? After testing the $22 gadget, I’m excited to tell you about the pros and cons of using it and why, ultimately, I think it’s worth a try.
I came across the mattress lifter while scrolling through Amazon’s bestsellers one day, and it reminded me that a coworker from a previous job had raved about something similar. I didn’t consider trying such a tool at the time because my mattress was fairly short and lightweight back then, but after seeing the lifter online years later, I figured it could be the perfect solution for my newer, heavier mattress.
Using the mattress lifter is straightforward: Holding its large, ergonomic handle, you slide it in so that the tip is at an angle (not straight on) in between your mattress and box spring or platform bed. Make sure to slide it all the way in so that your mattress rests on the straight edge by the handle. And that’s it! Your mattress should rest 4 to 5 inches above the box spring, giving you space to reach between and put on your fitted sheet. Personally, that’s just enough space for me to get in and pull my sheet over the edge of the mattress, but if you’d prefer to have even more space, you might instead try the Zlumber Jack that CNN Underscored’s product testing editor Suzanne Kattau tested, as it has an adjustable height.
I’ll admit, sliding the tool in to lift my mattress is still a little bit difficult because of the weight, and I usually have to use both hands. But once the lifter is inserted, I can breathe a sigh of relief because I don’t have to rush to pull on my fitted sheet with one hand before my other hand gives out from holding up the mattress. In the past, I’ve alternated between a few uncomfortable positions in an effort to complete this task, including balancing the mattress on my knee while bending down even further to pull the sheet underneath. With this tool, however, the process is simple and painless.
