If your algorithm is at all like mine, you’ve probably had a jump scare or two at the appearance of some skin care aficionado wearing an LED mask on your For You Page. There’s been much discussion about if there’s any actual efficacy to these now-ubiquitous beauty devices (experts and studies say there is), especially considering their often steep price tags, but lately, there’s been one mask in particular that’s emerging from the red, glowing pack: the Shark CryoGlow. And speaking as someone who’s used it for over a year, the attention is well deserved.
Why it’s going viral
LED masks seem to be the “it” skin care device of the moment. In general, they’ve been shown to stimulate skin’s collagen and elastin production using specific wavelengths of light, which correlate to different colors. Red light is commonly used to treat fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots; blue light treats breakouts and blemishes by fighting acne-causing bacteria; and infrared light penetrates the skin deeply to tighten and tone. The result is healthier, more youthful-looking skin. Until recently, these LED treatments were only accessible at an aesthetician’s or dermatologist’s office, but at-home masks have enabled folks to bring LEDs into their homes, a big advancement since regular use is necessary to see results.
Aside from the skin care benefits of LED, this mask also boasts a feature that others don’t: an optional integrated cooling, depuffing under-eye treatment. The two adjustable “chill pads” inside the mask can be used at the same time as an LED treatment, or on their own for a quick under-eye boost.
