Topical products aren’t a magical fix, but knowing what to look for in anti-aging skin care products can help minimize wrinkles, fine lines and crepey skin over time. According to Dr. Doris Day, a 63-year-old board-certified dermatologist who regularly shares perimenopausal skin care tips on social media, your skin begins to thin and lose volume as you age. “Old acne scars that were barely visible in your 20s can start to look deep and almost like wrinkles,” Day said. The areas of the face she sees signs of aging in first are the lower eyelids and the area around the mouth, which is where skin is thinner and muscle movement leads to faster collagen breakdown.
To combat the telltale signs of aging, Day recommends incorporating sun protection, retinols and RLX201 — a patented longevity molecule that helps support collagen production — into your skin care routine. She also suggests looking for products that are formulated with vitamin C for antioxidant protection and with exosomes, which can be helpful for skin rejuvenation.
If you have sensitive skin or acne-prone skin, you may be wondering how you can safely build an anti-aging skin care routine. The key here is to start slow. “It’s best to start with one new product at a time and build up by adding new ones every two to three weeks until you have your complete routine,” Day said. “This way your skin has time to adapt to new ingredients and if you react to any product it will be easier to tell which one is the issue.”
Ahead, I asked the New York-based dermatologist about the skin care products she recommends to patients with mature skin and the products she uses in her own beauty routine as a woman over 60.
