For individuals living with eczema, a skin care routine centered on gentle, skin barrier-restoring products can help manage the symptoms brought on by a flare. “Eczema is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that waxes and wanes and causes the skin to become itchy, red and irritated,” Dr. Shira Wieder, a board-certified dermatologist at Montefiore Einstein, said.
Though there are several skin conditions that fall under the umbrella term “eczema,” according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, most people who use the term are referring to atopic dermatitis. “Atopic dermatitis is the kind of eczema that often starts in childhood,” Wieder said, adding that various factors like genetics and environmental triggers play a role in its development.
Some of the other more common types of eczema include irritant contact dermatitis, which is caused by exposure to irritants, like detergents, and allergic contact dermatitis, which is caused by an allergic reaction to certain chemicals, Wieder said.
To help you find the best eczema-friendly skin care products, I tapped several dermatologists for their insights and product recommendations.
